Why does my laptop take so long to shut down?

Many people experience that their Laptop takes up a lot of minutes to shutdown. Although it is justifiable that if some apps are opened in the background, they need some time to close. However, there are cases when the Laptop takes minutes to shut down even when no program is running.

In this article, we have provided complete details regarding this issue.

Hitting the Shutdown button

Once you press the shutdown button, the OS informs all the running programs to shut down. They do not just shut down randomly, but their current running state is saved first so that the work can be continued from where it is left.

All the background programs save their state and then send a call to the OS. The OS then forcefully quits all the programs. Another thing running parallel to this event is the hardware part. As the shutdown is pressed, all the hardware drivers are given a message to shut down the running parts. The hardware also saves the state of their current activities to continue once the Laptop is restarted.

Since these are a series of steps necessary before the Laptop going ultimately off, you have to face some delay in the actual shutdown.

Fixing the long Shutdown problem

There are many small things that you can do to speed up the Laptop, shutting down process such as:

  1. Make sure that all the programs running in the background are turned off before the shutdown.
  2. Ensure that all the transfer related things such as network data transfers, file downloads, and etc. is completed prior to the shutdown.
  3. Make sure that your Laptop is free from Malware. Use anti-virus protection programs to clean-up your computer.
  4. Make sure that your Operating System is updated. Sometimes Laptop goes direct to Software Update once the shutdown option is pressed.
