Working Safely in the Heat

Summer is one of the best seasons for all. However, for those who have to work outside on the hot days, it’s important to look after yourself. Overheating is not fun. To avoid dehydration, here are five safety tips to watch out for when working in the heat.

Drink a Lot of Water

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Not only on a hot day, but drinking water is essential every day. Drink plenty of water throughout the way. Make it a part of your morning routine to drink water right when you wake up. That is when you are most dehydrated.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

This is not the time to wear thick pants or heavy sweaters. Wear light shirts, and go ahead and wear shorts if your job will let you. Thick fabric will only deter you immediately. Wear a hat to keep you protected.

Sunscreen

Wearing sunblock is very important when being out in the sun for long hours. If you don’t put on sunscreen, you’re going to have a horrible sunburn for days.

Limit Yourself

Remember not to overdo it. You are more important than completing everything on the checklist. You can only do so much. Take breaks when you need to, and stop whenever you feel lightheaded. Over-exerting yourself can be detrimental to your overall health leading to a hospital visit.

Get a Good Rest

You should always take care of yourself the night before a heatwave. Eat a good meal, go to bed early, and be aware of warning signs. You should take working in the heat very seriously. Research about the symptoms of overeating. Symptoms from overheating include heat cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke which is the worst of all.
